The Illinois Wing has conducted the premier cadet aviation academy since its inception in 1966. The academy is named after its founder and long-time commander who is still an active member in the Arizona Wing.
Flight operations are conducted at Coles County Memorial Airport in Mattoon, IL. Billeting is in dormitories at nearby Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. Along with daily flight instruction, cadets receive ground instruction in their respective programs. Johnson Flight Academy Website
Activity Director, Lt Col Rick Gale, stated, “JFA has always drawn cadets from across the country. In fact, one year we had a cadet from a USAF base squadron in Germany.”
JFA is unique in that cadets can receive hands-on flight training in powered aircraft, gliders or a hot air balloon. Many cadets attend for three years to attend all three programs.
“This year JFA will conduct power flight instruction in C-172s, advanced instruction in G1000 NAV III aircraft the first week. The second week includes flight instruction in power, glider and balloon,” according to Lt Col Gale. “We prefer G1000 candidates who previously attended Johnson Flight Academy or have pre-soloed.”
Glider and balloon students must be age 14 or completed the 8th grade. Power and G1000 students must be age 16. Grade requirements (member must be this rank at time of application) – SrA for balloon, SrA for gliders and SSgt for powered flight.
The academy is in need of senior members as well. There are openings for: power, glider and balloon certified flight instructors; tow pilots, public affairs officers, and administrative personnel.
